Hour 4. Learning Silverlight Basics > Understanding Silverlight

Understanding Silverlight

Silverlight is a cross-platform implementation of the .NET Framework. Originally targeted toward Rich Internet Applications (RIAs), Silverlight functioned as a browser plug-in, which provided a subset of the .NET common language runtime across multiple operating systems for Windows and Apple. It served as an excellent rich Internet and media application framework and has been used for online viewing experiences for Sunday Night NFL Football, the Winter Olympics, and Netflix.

As of Silverlight 4.0, the ability for applications to run out-of-browser (OOB) was introduced. This allows an application to be deployed through a web browser, but no longer requires the web browser as the startup mechanism. This enables Silverlight applications access to advanced permissions for things such as Component Object Model (COM) interoperability and access to hardware such as a webcam and microphone.
