Chapter 20. Special Applications of QFD > QFD in DFSS Environments

20.1. QFD in DFSS Environments

There are many different DFSS approaches, and each has an associated roadmap. In fact, it seems as though each of the major Six Sigma consulting groups developed one of its own! Some are more focused on product development, while others are more focused on service development. The most popular roadmaps, which we will explore in detail, are DMADV, DMEDI, IDOV, CDOV and CDOC. Compounding this alphabet soup is the fact that the letters stand for different words in the different acronyms: for example, “D” for Define or Design, “I” for Identify or Implement, and “V” for Validate or Verify. If this makes the reader confused, one can only imagine how it is interpreted by those trying to purchase DFSS consulting services! And if this isn’t enough, each DFSS consulting effort in which I have been involved has required some customization of the DFSS approach to align with the client’s New Product Development (NPD) process. (Failure to customize in this way is a sure recipe for confusion and frustration in the design community.)

Notwithstanding the need for customization, most DFSS roadmaps offer strong support of QFD as a required element of the DFSS implementation. We will now explore each of the most common DFSS approaches and discuss where QFD fits into each specific roadmap.
