Profile of Colombia Online

In June 2011, Colombia had the third-largest Internet population in South America with 22.5 million Internet users. This is the first time Colombia’s Internet population has exceeded half of its total population. Colombia’s online community accounts for 10 percent of all Internet visitors in South America. Growth since 2000 was a whopping 2,352 percent. Colombians spent about 23.9 hours per month online, an hour and a half more than the world average. Close to half of the Internet audience in Colombia was under the age of 24, and more than 70 percent were under 34 years old, comprising a younger population than the rest of Latin America.

According to a September 2010 comScore report, Colombians aged 15–24 spent an of average 28 hours online. Other age groups spent a combined 19 hours online. In middle-aged and older groups women’s time online overtook men’s, leaping ahead in the 45 to 54 age bracket. Women in this group spent 22.3 hours online and the guys that age 15.5. There were fewer people aged 45+ online, but women in that age group spent much more time online than men.
