Finally, you might be thinking, here is some really targeted marketing—discounts. But there’s a reason why this is the last one on the list; it should not be your highest priority.

Discounts and online coupons are nice for customers, but in social media terms they are like candy. They are really yummy to consume, but you cannot make a diet of them. You might get a number of friends and followers, but they won’t be interested in your business, just whatever deal comes along next. That’s not the kind of relationship you want to foster.

Discounts and any sort of ecoupon should be used in moderation. You can give them away randomly, or tie them to some fun contest, but they should be used sparingly. Too much “special” means that nothing is special at all.
