By definition, goals and objectives differ. Goals are broad; objectives are narrow. Goals are vague; objectives are specific. However, when you get outside of academia, the terms goals and objectives are used interchangeably. The important thing is that no matter which word you use, they are measurable. That means if you have no way of knowing whether you’ve achieved it, it’s not a very good goal. If your goal is to be rich, how will you know when you’ve arrived? If your goal is to be a millionaire, though, that’s pretty clear-cut. An even better goal would be, “I want to have a million dollars in liquid assets by the time I’m 40.” Now you just have to ask yourself whether that is realistic.
