If content is written specifically to rank in a search engine, it probably won’t be popular in the social media environment. That’s especially true in sites such as Digg, Mixx, and StumbleUpon. These communities are very wise to the attempts of search engine optimization experts to place content into these channels in the hopes of getting to the popular page.
For example, if Digg gets even a whiff of a notion that you are a marketer—especially if you are foolish enough to submit your own content to the site—they won’t be nice to you or your submitted content. The community comes together and actually makes it very clear that marketers are not welcome in Digg. Stories usually get buried within a short time and Digg will sometimes go as far as to mark the site the content came from as spam. If enough reports of spam come through from a site, Digg can ban it as a content source.
