Chapter 1. Introduction

Welcome to mySAP Toolbag for Performance Tuning and Stress Testing: A Technology Stack Approach! Over the course of these 15 chapters, we will walk through everything necessary to plan for, staff, develop, test, execute, and evaluate the results of stress testing (sometimes called load or performance testing) so as to ultimately tune and optimize your SAP systems for the best performance possible. SAP stands for Systems, Applications, and Products in Data Processing, an acronym better known for including all of the very capable albeit expensive software applications developed by SAP AG, one of the largest software companies in the world. By defining concrete success criteria that reflect what good performance means to you and the users of your particular SAP systems, and then leveraging the right tools for the job at hand, you will be well positioned to test and tune the impact of everything from replacing your core R/3 Enterprise solution's disk subsystem, to analyzing the impact that new NetWeaver-enabled complex business processes have across multiple mySAP components in your growing enterprise. Because my experience is entrenched in the real world of SAP deployments, infrastructure upgrades, and ongoing support, you will benefit not only from my years of lessons “learned the hard way,” but also from my hands-on experience with the tools and approaches commonly used to test and tune, along with what I consider to be “best practices” in performance tuning and stress testing that I have developed along the way.
