Chapter 1. The Evolution of Scrum > IBM’s Experience in Distributed Scrum

IBM’s Experience in Distributed Scrum

Many of the examples in this book come from members of IBM Scrum Teams. These teams operate within all four levels of distribution and as Isolated Scrum Teams, Scrum of Scrums, and Totally Integrated Scrum Teams.

IBM is an incredibly large and diverse organization. To give some sense of the scale, the company produced more than US$98 billion revenue in 2007 with a net income of US$10.4 billion. This exceeds the Gross National Product of 120 small countries. In 2009, there were over 416,000 employees in more than 200 countries. The largest two business units have over 35,000 software engineers between them.
