Chapter 7. Coach as Teacher > Teach During the Team Start-Up

Teach During the Team Start-Up

When a company wants to “go agile,” they turn to you, the coach, and ask, “How do we get teams started?” This creates a flurry of questions in your mind. What do I need to know before starting up a team? How much do teams need to know about agile before they “go”? What do they need to know about each other? About the product to be built? About what they will become as a team? You sense something crucial and fleeting about this moment, and you are right. Although you reinforce agile constantly as the team works together, the team start-up allows you to teach agile at its most basic and potent. This time will not come again.

Powerful team start-ups transpire in a day or two; they need not take several days or a week. Those that go long often delve further than needed into team building or get deep into the work, both of which are better done in the sprint as a team pursues shared goals. Team building, especially, resonates more with people done in the context of the work rather than an “event” for its own sake. So, keep the start-up short and specific.
