A.5. Enterprise Integration Issues

For many organizations, the challenge of developing enterprise software in isolation is dwarfed by the complexity of how to understand that system’s interactions with others to deliver the services it provides. There are two specific aspects of this challenge that can be distinguished.

The first aspect, which we will call delivery integration, is the deployment and management of enterprise software into operation [93]. There are many aspects of this problem that arise from the key operational concerns associated with the deployment of any large system: controlling external access, continuous operation in the face of failure, redundancy and backup of data, power management, and so on. These concerns are important individually for each enterprise software system, but the main challenge arises in collectively managing an extensive portfolio of enterprise software such that these operational concerns can be adequately addressed. So for example, it may be relatively straightforward to perform a security assessment on a single system to ensure that Internet-based access to data is restricted.
