Chapter 1. Why Is Enterprise Software Delivery So Difficult?
Chapter Summary
This chapter introduces the book’s main themes: globalization of the enterprise, cost efficiency in delivery, and agility in meeting new market needs and expectations. To establish these themes, I discuss today’s enterprise systems delivery challenges, review the current focus for enterprise software delivery organizations, and outline the evolving expectations and demands on enterprise software delivery. I draw the following conclusions:
• Economic pressures have focused attention in enterprise software delivery organizations on cost-cutting activities, severely stretching existing delivery practices.
• New organizational models are required to support enterprise software delivery organizations with greater geographic diversity and where integrated software supply chains are being created.
