I define and explore agility in enterprise software delivery, focusing on the issues of agility at scale, as they apply to the global enterprise. I make a series of practical observations on the application of agile practices to global software delivery and come to the following conclusions:
• Scaling agile practices requires explicit attention to organizational transition aspects affecting many roles and activities across the delivery life cycle.
• Complexity occurs at many levels in the global enterprise; it is essential to use simplifying techniques to manage this complexity.
• Scaling the rollout of an agile approach must be based on a managed program with clear goals, objectives, and key performance indicators.
