9.2. Status and Motivation

Over the past decade, pressures on enterprise software tools vendors have increased. For IBM Rational, the constant cost and efficiency pressures typical of many software domains have been augmented with particular challenges, such as the following:

• Increased competition from offerings of open-source software development tools producing highly innovative capabilities developed and supported by large worldwide communities and available for use at zero cost2

2. There is a deeper discussion over whether open-source software is really zero cost. It’s free to download, but other factors must be taken into account if that software is to be adapted, integrated, deployed, and maintained.

• Rapidly evolving software delivery practices, including the push toward more frequent, incremental delivery approaches; self-service administration; and interface-level transparency to integrate and adapt software to local needs
