17.5. END POINT

Lean is most effective when everyone involved genuinely pursues continuous improvement and understands the Lean fundamentals and the indisputable benefits of creating more customer value and eliminating waste. This occurs only after acknowledging that waste exists. To illustrate, the Japanese use the analogy, fish see water last. Fish live in water their entire lives, but most never really see the water until they are pulled out in a net or on a hook. Likewise, we may be unaware of it, but we are surrounded by waste. Lean methods and techniques are valuable in that they help us see the waste, but it is up to the project team to find creative ways to eliminate or reduce waste. Those project managers who gain this insight are on their way to being more effective, productive, and responsive to their customers.
