This chapter explores the essential ingredients for building a great requirements workshop. As with facilitation, each ingredient is simple—but not easy. Because humans think in a nonlinear manner, the unpredictable will occur in workshops. The ingredients discussed in this chapter actually exploit the possibilities of unpredictability and enable the group to manage the requirements process elegantly, honestly, and effectively for all stakeholders. This chapter is an overview of each of these ingredients. Later chapters illustrate them in detail.
