Culture change comes from both ends of the organization chart

An interesting lesson from this experience is about management support for change. Good managers will constantly be on the watch for ways to help their teams improve their effectiveness. When managers see their team members embracing a new approach, the nature of introducing change includes providing air cover to the de facto leaders who want to improve things.

This isn’t to say that managers should abdicate their responsibility to lead. Rather, it says that everyone on the team can have an important leadership role, and that sometimes good management leadership is to simply provide support for what the team’s grass-roots leadership seeks to accomplish.
