The Editor

The Xcode 4 Standard editor (select the left-hand segment of the Editor control in the toolbar) is straightforward and similar to Xcode 3. Type your text and save it. The completions and indentations are the same. If you click in a symbol, it highlights with a gray underline and offers a pop-up menu to edit all instances of the symbol in the current lexical scope.

In Xcode 3, you could command-double-click to be taken to the definition of a symbol and option-double-click to get a Quick Help window documenting it. Xcode 4 does the same, except that it takes a single-click. Xcode signals the feature by giving the symbol a “link” appearance; if it doesn’t show up, move the mouse cursor out of the symbol and back in.

The Editor control can select two other editors for the Editor area. The third, the Version editor, is covered in the “Source Control” section of this chapter and in more depth in Chapter 7, “Version Control.” The middle button displays the assistant editor.
