The proposed SMM better satisfies the goal of modernizing a legacy system with lower cost, and higher reliability and performance than the existing fault-tolerance methods. The existing methods rely on HSI availability after their failures instead of the preventive process that is inherent in SMM. The module provides a preventive approach that enhances the SD&Ds’ efforts to modernize HSI before their mean time before failure (MTBF). The SMM is based on a structured preventive and effective maintenance and long-term monitoring of primary HSI.
The SMM is defined as the type that does not require actual modernization of HSI since the module replaces parts before the MTBF (Dargan & Hermes, 1997). SMM takes advantage of modern tools and technologies, fault-tolerance analysis, and software engineering to compare modernization alternatives.
