Survival Business Revisited

In Chapter 5, “Foster an Archimedean Mindset,” we discussed how the operating reality in BoP markets can lead firms to engage in Survival Business. Alexandre’s division is a good illustration.

First, it was replicative as opposed to innovative. The top-down, copycat strategy was not working. It prevented the firm from seeing an exciting human-centered mission and any growth potential in Africa. Next, survival business can often be informed by pure opportunism. A sole focus on the “limited” market allowed is opportunistic. Paradoxically, not only did the firm not live to its claimed health mission, but it also left money on the table. Third, survival business tends to focus on short-cycle activities. This approach involved closing any sites that were deemed “nonstrategic” by the company. The company sought to minimize its investment.
