14. Team-Spirit Key #3: A Supportive and Knowledgeable Manager/Leader

The next key to developing team spirit is having a supportive and knowledgeable manager or team leader. This is especially crucial when the team is going through its initial development. Getting a first-time manager to become supportive and knowledgeable about teamwork is the responsibility of the team manager or leader herself, the team members, and the organization.

Let’s begin with the latter. The organization has the task of recruiting individuals who can succeed in the team environment and the team-building role and then giving them training on management, leadership, and team skills. When organizations do this, it is much easier for the manager and her teams to succeed in their roles. Many organizations have training programs that accomplish this and others send their new managers and team builders to outside programs.
