ARPAnet

A research network developed by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). It initially linked a few research organizations in the United States. The Milnet is a spinoff of the ARPAnet, for DoD use. The ARPAnet is the precursor of the Internet.

compromise

An accidentally or intentionally caused situation that prevents a system from fulfilling its intended requirements. Of particular concern are compromises resulting from malicious human actions such as system penetrations, subversions, and other intentional misuses. The term is also used more generally; a compromise may also result from a system malfunction, spontaneous external event, or other causes.
