Interlacing Problems

Problems arising from the nature of interlaced and noninterlaced images are some of the most pervasive and least understood.

Because video cameras capture each field of a frame at different moments in time, moving objects may be in one position in one field and in a different position in the next field. You'd never notice the difference as the video is playing, but it becomes quite apparent when you view a single interlaced frame. The way interlacing makes a moving object look when viewed as a still frame is described as combing or field artifacts. Interlacing can also become apparent when you make a clip play in slow motion.
