Chapter 1. Getting the 24P Mindset > The Camcorder Revolution

The Camcorder Revolution

First and foremost, 24p is a switch on some new camcorders. The first cameras to offer it were high-definition (HD) models, ranging in price from about $50,000 to $100,000 (see Figures 1.1 and 1.2). Then several prosumer digital video (DV) models followed, ranging from $3,000 to $5,000 (see Figures 1.3 and 1.4). Then came a hybrid format, HDV, which records compressed high-def images on a MiniDV cassette, along with camcorders in the prosumer price range (see Figures 1.5 and 1.6).

Figure 1.1. The Sony CineAlta camcorder (HDW series) was developed at the request of George Lucas, who used it to shoot Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones in 24p HD. However, before the camera was delivered to Lucas, coauthor Pete Shaner and his crew used it to make the first 24p HD feature film, Nicolas. (Photo courtesy Sony Electronics, Inc.)
