If you’re reading Chapter 8 of Adobe After Effects CS5 Studio Techniques, you might expect the arrival of Warp Stabilizer to have changed everything in the chapter. Most of what’s there is still valid but I suggest you read this section after the introduction to the chapter and before the “Point Tracker” section.
The new kid on the panel in After Effects CS5.5 is a completely unique tool that requires no initial setup in order to stabilize or lock off a shot with camera motion. It is therefore easy to use and can remove all indications that stabilization was added. There are still uses for the techniques promoted in the previous edition, principally because this new tool produces no usable data. The new methodology is akin to wholesale replacement of the original shot with a new improved version, and often that’s more or less what you want.
