You’ve shot the footage you needed; now what? You’re probably eager to jump right in and start editing, and we understand that, but you should first complete a few important tasks that shouldn’t be overlooked. These tasks include backing up footage that you shot and transferring it from the camera memory card to field storage and finally to media or editing storage.

We know that backup and data integrity are not the sexiest of subjects, but they’re perhaps the most important part of any tapeless workflow, including when working with DSLR footage. After all, you may have shot some beautiful footage, but that beautiful footage won’t do you any good if you lose it between production and post. In this chapter we’ll dive right in and take a look at backing up and archiving.
