OK, we’ll admit there are many different backup workflows, but we’d like to suggest an overall backup workflow that we use all the time. In subsequent sections, we’ll break down the following workflow steps into more detail.
1. Mount memory cards on a portable machine. Using a memory card reader or a USB cable between your computer and camera, mount a memory card to gain access to footage contained on that card.
2. Transfer footage to field drives. After mounting cards to a portable computer, transfer that footage and data to a portable drive (or better yet, multiple portable drives). If a drives fails (when it fails), you’ll have a backup. Don’t put off backing up your media. You can do this immediately by copying the contents of a memory card as folders and files to a portable drive or by creating a disk image (.dmg).
