In my editing classes in film school, the one thing that was drummed into our heads day after day after day was “Save your work!” We were told to save it early and often. Every five minutes was the norm to be saving our projects. The reason for this was a good one. Video editing takes up a lot of processing power, which in turn could lead to your computer crashing.
That was back in the early 2000s, though, and computers have become much more stable. However, saving your projects—no matter if you’re writing a book or editing a movie—early and often is a good rule to live by. Crashes and power outages do still happen and I’ve seen hours of editors’ work lost in an instant because they forgot to save.
