Chapter 4: Planning and Shooting Your Mo... > Find and Shoot for a Beginning, Midd...

Find and Shoot for a Beginning, Middle, and End

Stories have a beginning, middle, and end. That’s the basic structure of a story. Being aware that you are going to need something to begin your video, end your video, and then include something in between, will help you look for the variety of shots you need when shooting video.

Just because you need a beginning and end does not mean that these are simply the first and last shots you took, then everything in between simply follows the order of your shooting. While there are some events that do indeed have a chronological order that can be important to record for story, most of the time you’re going to need something that is more dramatic and unique for the beginning and end of your video than simply the first and last shots you took. That may even include a series of shots that create an interesting beginning or ending. Then you will need shots that fill out and enhance the story that you are telling about your subject.
