Chapter 2. Protecting Yourself on eBay > Protecting Yourself Against Fraudulent...

Protecting Yourself Against Fraudulent Sellers

Anytime you buy something online, you run the risk of not getting what you paid for. Damaged goods, counterfeit items, used merchandise, products that don’t match what was advertised, or goods that were never delivered—these are all issues you can encounter when shopping online.

eBay defines auction fraud as paying for an item and never receiving it, or receiving an item that is less than what was described. Officially, eBay says that only 1/100th of 1 percent of all items sold on its site ended up as confirmed cases of fraud. That translates to more than 50,000 fraudulent transactions—a relatively small quantity, unless you happen to be in that number.
