Chapter 3. Navigate to and within Web Si... > Move between Windows, Tabs, or Recen...

3.4. Move between Windows, Tabs, or Recent Pages

You can move to a window or tab by clicking on it, or move through your recent pages in the current window/tab by clicking the Back/Forward buttons, but you don’t have to click at all because keyboard commands, rounded up in Table 3-1, are always at your fingertips (literally):

  • Previous and next windows: Command-~ (tilde, at the upper left of the keyboard) and Command-Shift-~ take you to the previous and next windows in a multiple-window pileup, as they do almost everywhere on the Mac.

    Tip:

To go directly to a specific window, use the list in the Window menu; a tabbed window is named by its frontmost tab.

  • Previous and next tabs: Two different sets of keyboard shortcuts let you move from one tab to another: the legacy Command-Shift-[ and Command-Shift-], and the newer Control-Shift-Tab and Control-Tab (the latter set is noted in the Window menu). “Previous” and “next” refer to the relative positions of tabs—left and right, respectively—not to which ones you’ve viewed most recently.

  • Previous and next pages: Instead of clicking the Back and Forward buttons in the toolbar, you can use Command-[ and Command-] to change the window contents to the previous or next page—“Forward” referring to the page you left when you used the Back command. These are the shortcuts for the History > Back and History > Forward commands, the menu equivalents of the Back and Forward buttons. This history is limited to the pages you’ve visited in the current tab of the current window.
