Going Public

A recurring question as Facebook continues to grow is whether it will go public. On the surface, all things point to the fact that sometime in the near future Facebook will either go public or be purchased. We tend to think that Facebook will lean toward going public. First, it is a powerful and large enough company that only a few companies out there could afford to purchase it. Second, there are no reasons for Facebook to want to sell. It’s growing at a fast rate on its own, has no problems raising money, and is in the position in which it can actually make purchases of other companies instead of the other way around. Third, Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg have their own way of doing things and have a fair amount of pride about that and their success.

Facebook has already gone through several rounds of funding; in its latest round in January 2011, it raised $450 million from Goldman Sachs and $50 million from Digital Sky Technologies. As part of the deal, Goldman Sachs will help Facebook raise $1.5 billion more. Facebook was valued at $100 billion in June 2011, up from a $50 billion valuation in January 2011. Altogether, Facebook has raised $800 million over five rounds of funding. It purchased FriendFeed in August 2009 for $47.5 million, and purchased Parakey in July 2007. In February 2009, Facebook invested a seed round of $350,000 in LuckyCal, a service that, based on multiple sources of information, predicts where you’re going to be and finds useful and entertaining things for you to do while you’re there.
