Chapter 3. Talking on Twitter > Replying to a Direct Message

Replying to a Direct Message

As we work within the website, you might miss receiving a Direct Message or a DM as it is referred to in the Twitterverse. When you receive @Mentions, you can catch them either in the main Timeline, your network’s Timeline, or in your @Mentions Timeline. Direct Messages are different. DMs are seen by you and only you (unless someone is looking over your shoulder, of course), are found not in your network’s Timeline or @Mentions.

  1. On your Twitter home page, single-click on the Direct Messages option. This takes you to your account’s Direct Messages page. The tweets here are not posted on Public Timelines.

  2. When you want to reply to a Direct Message, you can hover your cursor over it. Similar to making @Mentions, the Direct Message is shaded and offers two icons: an envelope (DM Reply) and a trash can (Delete DM). Single-click the Envelope icon, and you see in the Send drop-down menu that user’s name.

    A Little Birdie Told Me...

Unlike @Mentions that can be made to anyone in the Twitter network, Direct Message replies can be sent only to people who are following you.

  3. In the message field, type in your Twitter response. Unlike @Mentions, the username you are replying to does not use up any characters in your 140-character setup.

Figure 3.4. Hovering your cursor over a tweet offers you two options: Reply to a Direct Message and Delete a Direct Message. To reply to a DM, single-click the Envelope icon, type your message, and then click the Send button.

  4. Single-click on the Send button. You will be rerouted to previous DMs you have sent with a confirmation that your message has been sent.
