The Creative Mindset

It is widely accepted that creativity springs from the right brain. Yet this is seldom used at work. It’s no coincidence that the best ideas come to you when you’re in a state of relaxation or you brain is “asleep”. Be it in the shower, driving, going for a walk (mine is when I’ve just woken up), the best ideas come when you are in the frame of mind to visualize concepts. Effectively when the left brain is switched off.

Chris Lewis of LEWIS PR (and my former employer) has an interesting theory on this. From his standpoint most creative people are university graduates. Universities are places where the left brain is worshipped for its analytical compare, contrast and analyse function. From an early age young brains are trained to think reductively, to constantly dismiss ideas that don’t stand up to a predefined notion of “the norm”. However it’s just as easy to think synthetically, that is, build up rather than breakdown as a discipline. This is not only a good creative technique, but it’s also good for problem solving in business. Synthetic logic can provide an important creative standpoint – that of context.
