The whole point of being on Facebook is to get—and stay—in touch with people. So it’s no big surprise that the first of Facebook’s three setup steps gives you a chance to find out which of the folks you regularly email is already on Facebook. Section 4.2.1 covers this step in detail, but here’s the gist:
Click the name of the email account you use to communicate with the most pals (Yahoo, Windows Hotmail, or whatever) and then type in the email address you use with that account (and password, if there’s a spot for it). Or, alternatively, just leave in the email address you used when you registered for your Facebook account.
Click the Find Friends button. When you do, Facebook pops up a box asking you to log into your email account. (Or, if you’re already logged into your email account, you may see a box asking you to confirm that it’s okay for Facebook to access your friends’ email addresses.) In either case, follow the instructions in the box and wait a second while Facebook scans your email account for email addresses and tries to match each one to a Facebook member profile.
