“TO BRING ONE’S SELF TO A FRAME OF MIND AND TO THE PROPER ENERGY TO ACCOMPLISH THINGS THAT REQUIRE PLAIN HARD WORK CONTINUOUSLY IS THE ONE BIG BATTLE THAT EVERYONE HAS. WHEN THIS BATTLE IS WON FOR ALL TIME, THEN EVERYTHING IS EASY.”
—THOMAS A. BUCKNER
Over the past twenty years of digital design, designers have fallen by the wayside as the techies have taken control. Now it’s time for us—the designers—to change our mindset and get back in the game.
The design process is stuck in the old world of print: a super conglomerate agency, tangible artefacts, and deadlines. At its worst, it can be a world of ego-driven elitism and tribal mentality. Design needs to be redesigned.
Design is currently driven by deadlines, the points at which ideas, drafts, blueprints, and prototypes are printed, manufactured, and launched. We use the time before the deadline to conceive, produce, and refine our designs. Once the deadline has passed, we breathe a sigh of relief and declare the design to be finished.
