Saving a File

Even if you haven’t added anything to a new page, it’s always a good idea to save and name it right away. The insertion of images, movies, links, and other objects requires that you save the web page first. Remember to save the file in the directory you’ve previously defined as the site root as discussed in Hour 3, “Setting Up a Website.”

The .htm and .html file extensions are interchangeable. Traditionally, the .html extension has been more popular with developers working on the Mac or UNIX platforms because those operating systems have always supported longer file extensions. The .htm file extension reflected the older Windows version three-character file extension limit. Windows no longer has a character limit for file extensions, so using the universal .html extension is a good choice.
