Multidimensional Scaling

Another method covered in Chapter 3 and applied to blogs was multidimensional scaling. Like clustering, this is an unsupervised technique that does not attempt to make predictions, but instead makes it easier to understand how different items are related. It creates a lower-dimensional representation of a dataset where the distances are as close to the original dataset as possible. For display on a screen or paper, this usually means scaling data from many dimensions down to two dimensions.

Imagine, for example, that you have the four-dimensional dataset shown in Table 12-8 (every item has four associated values).
