WCAG 2.0 and HTML5

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0) has been very carefully designed to be technologically agnostic, and I trust you will see the common sense in them when you are building your web sites and applications. Building accessible stuff that works is a very nuanced area. As I mentioned previously, you will have to balance real-world application of both the code and these guidelines in a way that is practical. Accessibility is not theoretical, mystical, or ethereal.

The needs of people with disabilities are very real and these guidelines are just that—guidelines and not a standard. They are meant to be informative and instructive, with the net result being that you have more accessible and usable interfaces.

Image Note Currently, there aren’t a lot (or any) HTML5 test cases for WCAG 2.0. However, as I write, there are efforts to develop guidance and test suites for accessible and WCAG 2.0–conformant HTML5, and there will be more available as time goes on. So keep an eye on
