Understanding Meta Data

Meta data is commonly described as "data about data." Less poetically, it's information that describes, summarizes, or categorizes another body of data.

To understand this, let's look at an example. The a2zBooks application stores information about individual books in Book Content Items. Each Book Content Item (an instance of the Book ContentObject Type) has properties that contain the book's title, author, ISBN, price, and so on. (See Chapter 6, "Introduction to Spectra Programming," for information on ContentObject Types, Content Items, and properties.) However, in addition to the basic book data, the site you're building might require that you classify books in different ways. For example, a book could be classified by its genre, by the audience it appeals to, by its distribution channel, or by its binding type.
