"Lots of disjointed info" - by Clint on 18-OCT-2011

As you can see by the long list of authors, The Definitive Guide to Drupal 7 is written more like a list of articles than as a cohesive book.

I've been going through the book sequentially, working through the examples and exercises. I am up to the chapter on Views. There is a lot of information, and the exercises do test your ability to comprehend. In other words, they aren't always a step by step tutorial, so sometimes one must fill in the blanks. I think it's more effective than a straight tutorial because once one has figured it out, it sticks better.

Of course, if the goal is to see step by step instructions on how to do something, you'd be disappointed. Sometimes one wonders whether the author of the particular chapter already had prerequisite requirements installed on their system, because more often than I'd like, I have something missing on my setup.

Because the author of each chapter is different, the content from chapter to chapter is disjointed. I believe this is the main cause for prerequisites not being installed. It would take a really good editor to make sure that when going from chapter to chapter, author by author, the examples and exercises can indeed be worked without hours of searching for resolution using Google.

So there is a lot of great information found in this book, but be prepared to do some hunting if you plan to work through the book as I am.
