Chapter 1. Pre-production Primer > Designing the Video Experience

Designing the Video Experience

Web video—and video viewing in general—can be experienced in a wide variety of forms. For some projects, the user may click a Play button and watch the video. For other projects, the video augments the information presented to the user. No matter how the video is viewed, it can appear in various shapes and sizes in your SWF files created by Adobe Flash CS4 Professional or other Flash-based applications.

If you’re creating unique or custom video content, visualize and design how the video will be displayed before you start the video. The way you display the video to the user can predetermine what kind of video works best for the environment. For example, a live stream of a breaking news story may work better in a sidebar adjacent to the other information being displayed. A preview trailer of a high-impact action film may be better displayed in a large central area of the layout or a floating window on top of the content providing details of the film. Regardless of the situation, you need to be familiar with the ways to display Web video to an audience.
