Getting Your Own Domain Name

Before visitors can see your site, you need a domain name to associate with it . You can register your own domain name and then find a Web host to serve your site to anyone who visits the domain in a browser (see “Finding a Host for Your Site”). If you ever decide to change your Web host (or if they go out of business), you can move your domain to another Web host’s server and all of your URLs will stay exactly the same.

Only certain companies are accredited registrars of domain names (this view and the one below are from www.namecheap.com, no endorsement implied). You can use one of their sites to see if a desired domain name is available, or you can check through a Web host’s site.
