If you are like me, you don't read a an entire technical book. There's too much detail about this or that, not enough detail about the other. So, here's a rare one--I read this book cover to cover!
This is a small book (when comparing to most technical tomes), and it gives you a little taste of everything Joomla. But rather than feeling that it was lacking, I felt inspired to start digging into Joomla to find more--and this book gives you the resources you need to do just that.
I found the extra detail about the history of Joomla, very intriguing. I was on the fence about which CMS to start with--there are so many out there (DotNetNuke, Drupal, Wordpress, etc.)--but this section alone was enough to sell me. The Joomla team has the right mindset about their product, and Joomla's success is a testament to that.
For total newbies, Chapter 2 (What Now and Where Do I Begin?) is a perfect primer--discussing everything from domain registration, trademarks, and other basics; diving into some site planning tips; and finally moving on to the importance of choosing a good host. This is the type of content I like to see in a beginner book.
Chapters 4 through 6 are Joomla in a nutshell. Nice simple presentation of all the key Joomla concepts.
But what about this "SEO" thing? How do you keep visitors coming back to your site? How can you set up a simple brochure site--or even more complicated sites? What if I am a non-profit? Can you give me some insight from other industry experts? What are some typical problems encountered? Usability? The future of Joomla?
Surprisingly, all of this is touched on in The Official Joomla! Book.
What am I trying to say? If you are just getting started in Joomla and want a complete overview, you need to read this book! And this is coming from a developer. Sure, I will look at other websites and books for more in-depth technical information. But this book is a fantastic one-stop jumpstart into everything Joomla.
