8.1. The Component Model

In 1798 the U.S. government decided to end its reliance on foreign countries to supply army muskets. Eli Whitney, made famous for his invention of the cotton gin, secured a contract to produce 10,000 army muskets.

The problem was there were only a handful of skilled machinists in the early American republic. To solve this problem, Whitney invented something far more important than a machine. He invented a system that would permit anyone to create a product that would be just as good as one made by a highly trained machinist.
