Effective browser support for images, in fact, is one of the keys to the rapid success of the Web because it sanctioned the Web platform as a new multimedia channel. Any page we get from the Web today is topped with so many images and is so well conceived and designed that the overall page looks more like a magazine advertisement than an HTML page. Looking at the current pages displayed by portals, it's rather hard to imagine there was a time--and it was only seven or eight years ago--when one could create a Web site by using only a text editor and some assistance from a friend who had some familiarity with Adobe PhotoShop.
