Managing Files

The Design window and its main features were described in Chapter 1, so this chapter will focus on working with documents. When you first open Design, before you have created or opened any files, the main work area (the artboard) is gray. To get started working with Design, you need to open a document so that you can either start drawing or creating graphics or editing preexisting files. Both options are discussed in the sections that follow.

Creating New Blank Documents

Whenever you work with Design, you do so in the context of a document. As stated in Chapter 1, to open a new document in Design you choose File > New or Ctrl+N. When the New Document dialog box shown in Figure 8.3 appears, you can name the file immediately by typing a name in the Name box. You can also choose a preset size for the document frame by making a choice from the Presets drop-down list. When you’re done, click OK.
