Analyzing Web Traffic

Once you publish your site, it becomes important to track how many visitors your site receives, where those visitors come from, and which pages attract the most traffic. Your Web host probably provides you with such reports, and the place to start is to call your host’s tech support staff or read through the FAQ on its Web site to find out how to access such reports. In case you find the reports inadequate, or if you don’t have access to such reports because you’re hosting your site on your own Web server, some options for analyzing Web traffic are described below.

Installing a Hit Counter

The hit counter was one of the earliest tools for tracking visits to a Web page. A hit counter is a bit of code that produces a graphical display on a Web page that indicates how many people have viewed that page. Counters are still widely used, and they are relatively primitive in the amount of information they can provide.
