Choosing Layout Controls

Chapter 13 introduced you to the various layout controls available in Blend’s Toolbox. This section will look at the most popular ones in more detail because they’re the ones you are likely to use. You’ll learn how to insert each one, how to change its configuration in the Properties panel, and how to incorporate it with other user controls and extra layout panels.

Working with the Grid

The Grid layout control is the one used by default when you create a project, so you don’t have to do anything to create the grid; you have it in your artboard already. If you want to start with a new window so you can try out a grid, choose File > New Item. When the Add New Item dialog box appears, leave Window selected, and click OK. When the new blank window opens, close any other panels that might be open in the center of the Blend workspace, such as the Results panel, by deselecting them from the Window menu. Click the Design tab on the right side of the central workspace to switch to Design View. Be sure to scroll up so you see the top of the window. You should be able to see the label Window1 (or Window2, or Window3, depending on how many windows you have open) at the top.
