Part II: Standards-Based Design with Exp... > Formatting Basic Web Site Content

3. Formatting Basic Web Site Content

With Expression Web, the basic tasks involved in formatting Web site content are simple to use, but they’re not really as simple as they seem. For instance, formatting selected text as bold or italic is a matter of clicking the B (bold) button in a toolbar, just as it is in a word processing program. It’s just as easy to center a paragraph or choose a new type font. Those tasks are simple to perform. But behind the scenes, some complex functions are being performed that enable your Web page to conform to the latest Web standards.

This chapter focuses on the first tasks you’re likely to perform in formatting an individual Web page. Expression Web, like every Web editor, lets you type text, arrange your text in paragraphs, and specify page properties such as titles and background colors. These functions give you a way to understand how Expression Web uses CSS to make your site look the way you want in the widest possible range of browsers, and you’ll get a glimpse at how Web generates such code and makes it especially easy for you to view and edit a page’s underlying markup instructions.
