Apple provides excellent documentation in the iOS Application Programming guide detailing each state transition and the corresponding method calls and notifications you’ll receive. A couple points are critical, however:

You have a limited time to handle moving to the background.
You have approximately 5 seconds to return from applicationDidEnterBackground before iOS takes action and suspends or kills you. At a minimum, you should save any modified user data when moving into the background. You should also save application state information you might want to restore the application to where the user left it. They shouldn’t know that your application was terminated between when they left it and when it restarted.
